Reconciliation: It's up to Us

Year Level: 9-10

SOSE Outcome Level: 6

Author: Monica Wood
Position: Teacher
School: Toowong State High School

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to take on the challenge of reconciliation in their communities, workplaces, institutions and homes. The week in focus is framed by two significant dates in Australia's history which best symbolise the hopes and aims for reconciliation. May 27 marks the anniversary of the 1967 Referendum and June 3 is the anniversary of the High Court of Australia's judgment in the Mabo case in 1992.

This unit attempts to focus students on an important citizenship issue while involving them in a hands-on practical task that encompasses the skills of community life and getting things done. It incorporates the key competencies of seeking information, problem solving and working with others and in teams.
