Commonly Asked Questions and Answers

Why was Brisbane Bayside identified for possible funding?

Most of the 13 state schools in Brisbane Bayside were built between 1864 and 1966. Many educational resources are duplicated and not available for community use. Changing population and land use trends in the area have also impacted on some schools.

Why are there so many state schools in this area?

This is an older area of Brisbane that experienced major population growth in the 1950s and 1960s.The schools were built to cater for the large number of children requiring state education at that time. As the demographics of the area have changed, so have the educational needs of the community.

How will state school students benefit from State Schools of Tomorrow?

Within five years, Brisbane Bayside state school students will have access to world class educational facilities and more opportunities to develop to their full potential. Schools will feature the latest technology, flexible and more stimulating learning areas, multi-purpose facilities that can be shared among schools and with the local community, after-school opportunities and modern teaching support resources.

The modern schools will also be designed to maximise energy and water efficiency, and built to reduce the building 'footprint ' on the environment.

How will the community benefit?

Joint student-community use of modern school communities is central to the State Schools of Tomorrow initiative. The community will have access to most of the modern educational or multi-function facilities, providing practical benefits and helping to strengthen partnerships.

When did community consultation close?

Community consultation activities and written submissions closed at the end of February 2008.

How can I find out more information or talk to someone?

Email tomorrows-schools@deta.qld.gov.au or phone (07) 3237 0008 for details about how community feedback will be used to develop three proposals for education renewal in Brisbane Bayside.

What will happen now?

As part of the community consultation program, which finishes in December 2007, two community reference groups have been formed. From October 29, these groups will sit as one to consider all community submissions and feedback before they prepare a draft vision and facilities concept plan for Brisbane Bayside schools.

This draft will be made public and the community invited to provide feedback before the final proposal is developed.

This proposal will undergo State and Local Government planning and expenditure approval processes later this year and further feedback provided to the community early in 2008.

When could work start on building or modernising Brisbane Bayside schools?

Construction work to realise the educational vision is expected to start in mid to late 2008.
