Project background

Inala - State Schools of Tomorrow - August 2007

The State Schools of Tomorrow initiative is an $850 million investment in renewing and revitalising Queensland's state schools.

Eight schools in the Inala area are involved in a Round One project that could see more than $49 million invested in local schools over the next few years.

These are Inala, Inala West, Richlands, Richlands East, Serviceton South and Durack State Schools, Glenala State High School and Western Suburbs Special School.

Community consultation is underway to find the best way to renew and revitalise state schools in the Inala area.

This consultation involves a review of existing facilities and enrolments and seeks the community's views on ideas and options for local state schools.

The schools were chosen for several reasons. They have older facilities in significant need of upgrade or renewal, and they share an area where total state school enrolments have declined since a peak in the 1970s following the rapid population growth in the area in the 1960s and 1970s.

This means that most of the schools have considerable spare capacity. The close proximity between the schools means there is also an opportunity for them to work together more closely to deliver educational services.

Community consultation is led by a Community Reference Group that has been set up. It includes the Principal and P&C representative from each of the schools included in the project. A number of community leaders and groups, particularly those involved in education, training and employment, are also being consulted individually.

The ideas, issues and options raised during consultation will help to shape a series of recommendations for the future of local state schools that will be presented to the State Government for consideration later this year.

There is no predetermined outcome but one of the things the community will be asked to consider is whether there is a better way of organising educational resources to better suit the needs of state school children and their families in Inala.

The process will also include a careful demographic assessment of existing and future enrolments in the context of census data and local government planning.

The intent of the Tomorrow's Schools project is to have a range of sustainable well-resourced schools in Inala that offer a variety of educational opportunities and which meet community needs for several generations to come.

Information will be provided to the Inala community through newsletters and information sheets, shopping centre displays, advertisements, and this website.
