School Community Development Fund

The $50 million School Community Development Fund was shared amongst every Queensland primary and secondary state school in 2006-07 for projects that enhance school learning and play environments.

Schools and their P & C associations were required to determine how their grant would be spent at a local level.

Many schools opted for projects such as building outdoor learning spaces, creating covered playgrounds and walkways, and upgrades of science laboratories and school tuckshops.

Other works included environmental sustainability projects, enhancement of special education facilities, improved community access and upgrades of general learning areas.

The funding each school received was determined by a formula that considered enrolments, locality of the school and socio-economic factors.

The School Community Development Fund program highlights the Tomorrow's Schools emphasis on community involvement and consultation in the decision-making process.

It also draws on the best and most relevant aspects of the facilities grants and subsidy-based programs already familiar to state schools.
