Components, modules and plug-ins are pre-created programs not native to Joomla! These are installed separately and perform specific extra functions.

Components (green)
- Major installed programs which can only reside in the page centre.
- Take up the whole page real estate or display area.

Modules (red)
- Smaller installed programs that can be moved around the page.
- They are assigned to different module positions or page locations.
- These can also be refered to as publishing locations.

Plug-ins (blue)
- Even smaller programs that can be
- used in module positions (as the one below).
- embedded in the site HTML code such as the header.
- embedded in the webpage HTML code.
