Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

The Department of Education and the Arts is committed to creating an inclusive work environment that is free from all forms of unlawful discrimination and harassment, and where people are valued for their individual experiences, knowledge and abilities.

The Department has specific employment and career development strategy which aims to bring about better employment equity outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Department has been developed. The strategy is part of the Partners for Success Policy and seeks to ensure that our workforce is as diverse as the Queensland population it serves, and that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have equitable access to secure employment in all areas of the Department - as principals, teachers, other education workers, public servants and in the many other roles available in the department.

The strategy is closely aligned to the whole-of-government approach to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment endorsed by the Premier and monitored by the Office of Public Service Merit and Equity (OPSME). The strategy focuses on achieving employment outcomes and specific targets set for all government agencies. The targets are:

The strategy addresses the key areas of attraction, recruitment, retention and career development. We will be including information on policies, strategies and training programs on this website, so we will keep you updated on any new developments for the employment equity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Department.
