Harmony Day 2009

Harmony Day occurs on 21 March every year and coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Harmony Day was established in 1999.

Celebrations for Harmony Day have been held by the Department of Education, Training and the Arts since 2003. Harmony Day is an opportunity to highlight the importance for all Australians to respect one another regardless of cultural, racial or religious differences.

'Dance your way into Harmony Day' Event

The Department of Education, Training and the Arts will celebrate Harmony Day 2009 with a special morning tea event 'Dance your way into Harmony Day' (new window) 589k Adobe PDF document on Friday 20 March, from 10am, at The Auditorium, 111 George St, Brisbane.

This year, staff can participate in a spirit of inclusiveness and enjoy the benefits of living in a multicultural society by sharing our cultural diversity through dance. Students from Sunnybank State High School's 'Culture Snaps' program will entertain us with traditional dances from Cook Islands, Tongan and Indian cultures. Indigenous performers will demonstrate traditional song and dance and will explain the stories behind these unique art forms.

International Women's Day 2009

International Women's Day is celebrated throughout the world on 8 March each year. It is a day to recognise women's achievements and focus on the opportunities and possibilities of future generations of women.

In 2009, the theme for International Women's Day in Queensland is, "Our Women, Our State" which coincides with the Queensland Government's Q150 External Link celebrations.

International Women's Day - HerStories events

The Department of Education, Training and the Arts has marked International Women's Day with the annual Herstories event since 2003. Herstories is an opportunity for staff to network, listen to, and reflect on, the stories of. This year's guest speakers are:

Leigh Tabrett, the Deputy Director-General of Arts Queensland (DETA) and Sophie Yasso, the Regional Community Education Counsellor with the Fitzroy-Central West Queensland Region.

All staff in the Department are invited to attend one of the following Herstories events. However places are limited, so please RSVP no later than Monday 2 March 2009.

International Women's Day Regional Events

Townsville - The Association of Women Educators Inc. Northern Branch invites all women to a Meet n Greet (new window) 40k Microsoft® Word document on Friday 6 March 2009 from 4.00 — 6.00pm.

In addition, regions, institutes and schools may organise their own celebrations and are encouraged to post these on the One Portal Calendar and/or Employee Portal as a News Item.
