The Department is committed to working in partnership with Indigenous communities, other government agencies and the private and community sectors to effect positive and sustainable improvements in the quality of life, education outcomes and employment opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across the state.
Indigenous teachers play a significant part in motivating and supporting young people to excel in their learning, and in developing high aspirations for educational attainment and employment among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, families and communities. These educators are positive role models for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees make an important contribution to the Department through their work in a range of non-teaching-related roles, including teacher aides, other education workers, support staff, administrators, and public servants in a variety of policy and project-based positions.
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Framework for Action 2007 — 2010 (the Framework) builds on the work of the previous Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples ' Strategy 2002 — 2005 to provide a framework for continued work in the employment and career development of Indigenous people throughout the Department of Education, Training and the Arts.
The Framework details 44 key actions across the various portfolios of DETA that are aimed at improving results against the following five key areas:
