Global Opportunities within DE International (DEi), in partnership with James Cook University (JCU) and The University of Queensland (UQ​) offer online and face-to-face language courses for Queensland school students.

The courses aim to assist students with developing their international-mindedness, experience second language immersion and develop digital literacy.

Language courses will be conducted during the June–July 2021​ school holidays and in the January 2022​​ school holidays.​​

June–July 2021: Online language courses with James Cook University

Global Opportunities within DEi, in partnership with JCU Academy of Modern Languages, offers online language courses for state school students in Years 6-12 learning French, Japanese, Chinese (Mandarin), Italian and Spanish (Spanish available to students in Year 10-12 only).

Course dates: 28 June to 2 July 2021 or 5 to 9 July 2021

Delivery mode and technical requirements: Online delivery. Participants will need access to a reliable internet connection, computer, headphones, a webcam and be able to connect via Zoom.

Sessions: Students register for one JCU course being offered and will be expected to participate for 1.5 hours daily over 5 consecutive days.

Funding: DEi will fully fund program costs for successful state school students.

January 2022: Face-to-face and online language courses with The University of Queensland

Global Opportunities within DEi, in partnership with The University of Queensland—Institute of Modern Languages (UQ IML), is offering 2 language courses for Queensland state high school students studying Chinese, Japanese, French, German, Spanish and Italian. Both courses will be conducted during the Queensland summer school holidays, in January 2022, with the option to attend face-to-face or online.

Face-to-face UQ IML Language Enrichment course

For students in Year 11-12 studying Chinese, Japanese, French, German, Spanish and Italian.

Course dates: 10 to 14 January 2022 (dates to be confirmed)

Session length: 3 hours per day with a 30min break

Session time: 9.00am–12.30pm

Venue: The University of Queensland, St. Lucia Campus

Funding: DEi will fully fund program costs (other than those noted in the 'Exclusions' section below) for successful state school students.

Exclusions: Costs of transportation (including flights to/from Brisbane for regional students and any ground transport), accommodation in Brisbane and any meals in addition to the catering provided at UQ IML. Regional participants must arrive in Brisbane with a parent/guardian, who will be responsible for the student outside of course hours.

COVID-19 safety: Social distancing measures will be strictly adhered to.

Online UQ IML Language Enrichment course

For students in Year 9-12 studying Chinese, Japanese, French, German, Spanish and Italian.

Course dates: 10–14 January 2022

Session length: 1.5 hours for students in Years 9-10 and 2 hours for students in Years 11-12

Session times:

  • Morning (10.00am–11.30am) for students in Years 9-10 studying Japanese, Chinese, French, German, Spanish and Italian.
  • Afternoon (1.00pm–3.00pm) for students in Years 11-12 studying Japanese and French (only).

Delivery mode and technical requirements: Online delivery. Participants will need access to a reliable internet connection, computer, headphones, a webcam and be able to connect via Zoom.

Funding: DEi will fully fund program costs for successful state school students.

Students can only register for one course: online or face-to-face.

Global Competence and Leadership workshop

The Global Opportunities (GO) unit within DE International (DEi), in partnership with The University of Queensland (UQ), is pleased to offer a Global Competence and Leadership workshop for students in years 10 and 11 attending Queensland state schools.

This 1-day workshop provides the opportunity for young people to be inspired to explore the benefits of developing their global competence and forming networks with like-minded peers. Participants will also develop their leadership skills through targeted workshops including:

  • WISE Leadership presented by Dr Adam Kay​
  • Problem-led leadership presented by UQ Ventures
  • The importance of Global Competence in International Development presented by Joel Bird, UQID
  • Global Competence workshop presented by DE International

Course dates: 30 September

Time:

  • Registration arrival: 8.45am
  • Workshop: 9.00am–3.00pm (including morning tea and lunch)

Delivery mode: Face-to-face

Venue: The University of Queensland, St Lucia campus

Cost: DEi will fully fund program costs and catering (other than those noted in the 'terms and conditions' section below) for successful state school students.

Terms and conditions:

  • Participants will be responsible to cover the costs of transportation (including flights to/from Brisbane for regional participants and any ground transport), accommodation in Brisbane (for regional participants) and any meals in addition to the catering provided during the workshop.
  • All regional participants must have a parent/guardian, who will be responsible for the student in Brisbane outside the workshop hours.
  • COVID safe practices will be strictly adhered to.
  • DE International reserves the right to postpone, cancel or move the workshop to an online format at any time. Should this eventuate, all participants will be notified as soon as possible.

Applications are open. Schools are asked to nominate 1 student from each year level (years 10 and 11) to submit an expression of interest (EOI). EOIs must be received by Monday 13 September 2021 via email to global.opportunities@qed.qld.gov.au.
