Global Opportunities within DE International (DEi), in partnership with James Cook University (JCU) and The University of Queensland (UQ​) offer online and face-to-face language courses for Queensland state ​school students.

The courses aim to assist students with developing their international-mindedness, experience second language immersion and develop digital literacy.

Course costs are fully funded by Global Opportunities, DEi for successful applicants. You are encouraged to regularly visit this page for future program updates.

June–July 2022: Online language courses with James Cook University

Global Opportunities within DEi, in partnership with James Cook University Academy of Modern Languages (JCU AML), offers online language courses for state school students in Years 6-12 learning French, Japanese, Chinese (Mandarin), Italian or Spanish.

Course dates: 4–8 July 2022

Delivery mode and technical requirements: Online delivery. Participants will need access to a reliable internet connection, computer, headphones, a webcam and be able to connect via Zoom.

Sessions: Students register for one JCU course being offered and will be expected to participate for 1.5 hours daily over 5 consecutive days.

Funding: DEi will fully fund program costs for successful state school students.

Applications are open. Student registration by a French, Japanese, Chinese, Italian or Spanish state school teacher, must be received together with the completed expression of interest form by 10 June 2022.

January 2023: The University of Queensland IML Language Enrichment Courses – face-to-face delivery

For students in Years 9–12 studying Chinese, Japanese, French, German, Italian or Spanish.

Course dates: January 2023

Session time: 9.00am–12.30pm daily (3 hours class time with a 30-minute mid-session break daily)

Venue: The University of Queensland, St Lucia Campus

Cost: DEi will cover the costs of venue hire, tuition and course materials for all state school participants.

Duty of care: All classes will be delivered by registered Queensland language teachers, with additional supervision provided by representatives of DEi.

January 2023: The University of Queensland IML Language Enrichment Courses – online delivery

For students in Years 9–12 studying Chinese, Japanese, French, German, Italian or Spanish.

Course dates: January 2023

Session times: To be confirmed.

Venue: Online via Zoom

Technical requirements: Participants will need access to a reliable internet connection, computer, headphones and a webcam.

Cost: DEi will fully-fund program costs for successful state school students.

Global Competence and Leadership workshops

The Global Opportunities unit within DEi, in partnership with The University of Queensland (UQ), offers fully funded Global Competence and Leadership face-to-face and online workshops for students in years 10 and 11 attending Queensland state schools.

The workshops provide the opportunity for young people to explore the benefits of developing their global competence while creating networks with like-minded peers. Participants will also further develop their leadership skills and capabilities through targeted sessions.

July 2022: Global Competence through Leadership workshop​ – online delivery

The half-day online Global Competence through Leadership workshop is offered to state school students in Years 10 and 11. Please refer to the draft schedule for more details about the workshop. The final schedule will be provided to all successful applicants closer to the workshop’s delivery date.

Date: 7 July 2022

Time: 9.00am–12.30pm (including breaks)

Venue: Online via Zoom

Technical requirements: Participants must have access to a reliable internet connection, computer/laptop, headphones and a webcam

Cost: DE International will cover the workshop’s costs for state school participants

How to apply: Fully completed and signed expression of interest (EOI) and project consent form​ to be emailed to global.opportunities@qed.qld.gov.au by 5.00pm Wednesday 15 June 2022.

September 2022: Global Competence through Leadership workshop – face-to-face delivery

The 1-day face-to-face Global Competence through Leadership workshop is offered to state school students in Years 10 and 11. Please refer to the draft schedule for more details about the workshop. The final schedule will be provided to all successful applicants closer to the workshop’s delivery date.

Date: 19 September 2022

Time: 9.00am–3.00pm (including morning/afternoon tea and lunch breaks)

Registration arrival: 8.45am

Venue: University of Queensland, St Lucia Campus, Brisbane

Cost: Global Opportunities, DE International will cover the costs of venue, presenters, catering and workshop materials for all state school participants
