School holiday language courses
Global Opportunities within Department of Education International, in partnership with The University of Queensland (UQ) and James Cook University (JCU), offer online and face-to-face language courses for Queensland state school students.
The courses aim to assist students with developing their international-mindedness, experience second language immersion and develop digital literacy.
Course costs are fully funded by Department of Education International for successful applicants. You are encouraged to regularly visit this page for future program updates.
January 2024: The University of Queensland IML Language Enrichment Courses – face-to-face delivery
For students in Years 11–12 in 2024 studying Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese or Spanish.
Course dates: 8–12 January 2024
Session time: 9.00am–12.30pm daily (3 hours class time with a 30-minute mid-session break daily)
Venue: The University of Queensland, St Lucia Campus
Cost: Department of Education International will cover the costs of venue hire, tuition and course materials for all state school participants.
How to apply: Applications are open. Student registration by a Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese or Spanish state school teacher must be received together with the completed
expression of interest form by 5pm Friday 24 November 2023.
January 2024: The University of Queensland IML Language Enrichment Courses – online delivery
For students in Years 9–10 in 2024 studying Chinese, Japanese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian or Spanish.
For students in Years 11–12 in 2024 studying Indonesian, Japanese and Italian.
Course dates: 8–12 January 2024
Session times:
- Morning session for Year 9–10 students studying Indonesian, Italian, Japanese and Spanish.
- Afternoon session for Year 9–10 students studying French and German.
- Afternoon session for Year 11–12 students studying Indonesian, Italian and Japanese.
Venue: Online via Zoom
Technical requirements: Participants will need access to a reliable internet connection, computer, headphones and a webcam.
Cost: Department of Education International will fully-fund program costs for successful state school students.
How to apply: Applications are open. Student registration by a Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese or Spanish state school teacher must be received together with the completed
expression of interest form by 5pm Friday 24 November 2023.
Online language courses with James Cook University
Global Opportunities within Department of Education International, in partnership with James Cook University Academy of Modern Languages (JCU AML), offers online language courses for state school students in Years 6–12 learning French, Japanese, Chinese (Mandarin), Italian or Spanish.
Course dates: June to July 2024
Delivery mode and technical requirements: Online delivery. Participants will need access to a reliable internet connection, computer, headphones, a webcam and be able to connect via Zoom.
Sessions: Students register for one JCU course being offered and will be expected to participate for 1.5 hours daily over 5 consecutive days.
Funding: Department of Education International will fully fund program costs for successful state school students.
Applications are currently closed and are anticipated to open in early 2024.
