The department's Strategic Plan 2018–2022 sets the direction for every school to engage students in quality learning programs and to make connections between home, school and early childhood settings to support the successful transition to Prep.

Starting school is a significant event in a child's life. Schools create a climate of shared responsibility for successful transitions. The Supporting successful transitions: School decision-making tool (PDF, 4.4MB) supports Queensland schools and their partners to identify, plan and implement transition strategies and practices that meet the unique needs of their communities. It identifies the principles that underpin effective transitions and the areas of practice that support this process. The tool also details the outcomes to be achieved for children and families.

Step up into education is a Queensland Government commitment to better prepare and support all children to make a successful transition to Prep, and to support parents/carers involvement in their child's education. The Step up into education website provides resources to support parents/carers and educators to help make each child's transition to Prep a positive experience.

For children with disability and their parents/carers, starting school may require more careful planning and involve a broader range of partnerships.

This web resource aims to add value to existing school transition-to-Prep programs for all students by elaborating on the practices schools may use to support children with disability transitioning to Prep. The information includes resources for schools and for parents/carers.
