Purpose

The purpose of the Youth Support Coordinator Initiative (YSCI) is to support retention and attainment of young people in Years 10 to 12 who have disengaged or who are at risk of disengaging from education. The initiative enhances opportunities for further education and sustainable future employment.

Within each region, a Regional Youth Support Coordinator (RYSC) is employed to provide oversight and act as contact point within the regional office.

Eligibility

Schools identified as having full-time equivalent (FTE) allocation for the YSCI.

Allocation of funds

Schools with a YSCI FTE allocation also receive discretionary funds each year of $8,000 per 1.0 FTE. The amount an individual school receives is proportional to their YSCI allocation (for example, a school with a 0.2 FTE allocation will receive $1,600 per year). These funds are for the purchase of goods and services that align with the objectives of the YSCI that benefit students in the target group.

Each RYSC usually receives discretionary funds of $14,000* per year. These funds, accessed through regional internal orders, are for the purchase of goods and services that align with the objectives of the YSCI and are for the benefit of students in the target group. Some RYSC discretionary funding may be allocated to schools to support the YSCI. Payments to schools using the RYSC funding are assessed on a case by case basis within the region.

*For the 2023–24 financial year, each region has received a minor reduction in discretionary funds, with Metropolitan North region receiving $6,200 for the RYSC and each of the other 7 regions receiving $13,000.
