Purpose
The Queensland Virtual STEM Academy (QVSA) will lead innovation in digital and hybrid learning in key learning areas though the use of emerging technologies. This will include:
- virtually delivering enrichment programs for the best and brightest students in years 5 to 9 in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)
- facilitating and supporting virtual delivery of programs in languages and primary school STEM
- supporting the virtual delivery of programs to targeted cohorts of students, e.g. rural and remote students, indigenous students
- building teaching capacity through innovative and enabling technologies and sharing of best practice and innovation.
The QVSA network is leveraging its experiences and evidence of effective online learning strategies to develop innovative models of digital learning and provide support to other state schools who wish to provide innovative approaches to:
- address their student’s learning needs through increased access to subject specific expertise
- increase teacher capacity and capability to deliver specific subject expertise.
The 5 host sites for the QVSA are:
- Queensland Academy for Science, Mathematics and Technology (QASMT) – QVSA@QASMT
- Thuringowa State High School in partnership with Ingham State High School – QVSA@NQ
- Tropical North Learning Academy—Smithfield State High School – QVSA@FNQ
- Rockhampton State High School – QVSA@CQ
- Roma State College – QVSA@DDSW.

Eligibility
Recipients schools are those schools which comprise the QVSA network or are companioned by the QVSA in their delivery of emerging innovative virtual learning through the use of the digital resources and platforms facilitated and co-developed by the QVSA.
Allocation of funds
A budget of $30,000 is provided to Milpera State High School to develop their virtual delivery of English as a Learned Dialect (EALD) – Milpera Live program utilising the iSee virtual platform.
A budget of $60,000 is provided to QASMT to part fund a QVSA network position based at QASMT to increase course delivery to students and lead digital pedagogical practice and capability development.
A budget of $38,000 is provided to QASMT to distribute and coordinate QVSA course support, delivery technology upgrades and renewal across the QVSA network.
