GPs in State Schools Program

​​​Purpose

​To support 50 participating state schools in Queensland by funding a general practitioner (GP) or an alternative health practitioner (nurse p​ractitioner) to provide free healthcare services to secondary students 1 day per week. The program aims to remove barriers to timely and appropriate healthcare, thereby enhancing students' positive engagement in learning.

Duration of program

2024 to 2028*

*2021/22 to 2023/24 payments to 50 selected state schools as part of the GPs in Schools Pilot Program.

Eligibility

State schools.

Allocation of funds

Funding of $21 million over 4 years is being provided to support the GPs in State Schools Program. This funding will enable 50 Queensland state schools with secondary-aged students to offer free access to a GP or alternative primary healthcare provider 1 day per week.

Each of the 50 participating schools will receive funding to:

  • engage a health practitioner to provide free primary healthcare services to students
  • contribute towards travel costs for health practitioners serving schools outside the location of their base clinic
  • employ an administrative coordinator 2 days per week to support the day-to-day operations of the school-based clinic.

Funds may be recouped if a participating school withdraws from the program.​

How to apply

Schools participating in this program from 2024 to 2028 were selected following an expression of interest (EOI) process which concluded in 2024.​
