The department hosts research forums to hear directly from researchers about findings from their projects and what they mean for end-users, and from department staff on policies, processes, and the research happening at their site(s).

The department is delighted to have recommenced the forums following the COVID-19 pandemic, featuring research discoveries that have tangible impacts for Queensland schools, students and families.

Reducing barriers to wellbeing and learning for Autistic students through supportive and inclusive physical environments

Professor Dawn Adams, Dr Stephanie Malone, Dr Nicole Dargue and Dr Kate Simpson (Griffith University)

This research, which was funded by the Department's Education Horizon research grant scheme, identified how Queensland schools can change physical spaces to deliver a more inclusive and supportive learning environment for Autistic students. The presentation included photographs and videos of school environments in Queensland that show schools and teachers what these adaptations look like in practice, and also demonstrate that suggested adjustments need only be relatively minor in scale.

Development of a multilingual glossary of school-based terminology

Professor Margaret Kettle (Central Queensland University), and Professor Annette Woods, Dr Jennifer Smith and Dr Do Na Chi (Queensland University of Technology)

For this project, funded by the Department's Education Horizon research grant scheme, researchers worked with schools, families, and community groups to translate more than 600 school-based terms into 5 languages: Arabic, English, Kurdish Kurmanji, Portuguese and Swahili. The resulting glossaries support partnerships and 2-way communication between schools and bilingual learners and their families, and help support communication, language learning and social connection. The research team also developed a free, accessible step-by-step process that all schools and communities can use to design glossaries in languages relevant to their families and communities.
