More than half of all state schools in Queensland are located in rural and remote areas and about a quarter of state school students are enrolled in rural and remote schools.
The department's Action Plan for Rural and Remote Education 2011-15 outlines the department's response to the challenges of rural and remote education and details new initiatives that will assist students and their communities.
There are 7 Schools of Distance Education throughout the state: Brisbane, Capricornia, Charters Towers, Cairns, Mount Isa, Longreach and Charleville.
Distance Education uses the latest technology to deliver education programs to students who have limited choice for attending a mainstream school because of distance, travel due to occupation, medical and family circumstances.
Distance Education programs also increases the range of curriculum options for students in small secondary schools, mainstream settings, and a range of alternative education centres.
Home-based learners who do not attend a local school can also attend a School of Distance Education for an annual fee.
