The department works collaboratively with other agencies to support student access to safe travel to and from school. Students and their families may choose available
travel options in their area such as walking, cycling, carpooling or catching passenger transport services (bus, train, tram or ferry).
Translink safe school travel and student code of conduct
Translink's
school travel page provides information about safety, tickets and travel for school students in Queensland, including a
student code of conduct. The code includes information for students, parents, schools and transport operators.
Travel
concessions, including a
Translink Access Pass, may also apply on transport services.
Transport assistance schemes
In Queensland, there are 3 school transport assistance schemes for eligible students. These are administered by the Department of Education, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR), and the Queensland Catholic Education Commission (QCEC) on behalf on non-state schools.
These help parents with transporting their children to school, without removing parental responsibility. Each scheme has specific eligibility criteria, outlined below.
Department of Education—School transport assistance for students with disability
- The Department of Education's
school transport assistance program for students with disability assists eligible state school students with disability.
- Students are individually assessed by trained staff (transport assessors) in their enrolled school to determine the most appropriate available transport options (as necessitated by their disability).
- Transport options may include Translink or qconnect bus, ferry, train and tram services, as well as private vehicle travel.
- For students unable to travel on passenger transport services due to their disability, specialised minibus or taxi may be available options.
DTMR—School Transport Assistance Scheme
QCEC—Non-State Schools Transport Assistance Scheme
- Non-state school students may be eligible for assistance through the
Non-State Schools Transport Assistance Scheme (NSSTAS).
- The scheme is administered by the
QCEC as a joint initiative with Independent Schools Queensland (ISQ).
- NSSTAS has 2 programs available
- Bus fare assistance—for bus or ferry service to non-state schools outside the Brisbane City Council boundary
- Students with disability—providing assistance to families with costs in transporting their students with disability to non-state schools within Queensland.
