The Queensland Government Department of Education, including Queensland state schools (together referred to as the department, we, our, us), is committed to protecting your privacy and to compliance with the Information Privacy Act 2009, the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006 and other legislation as applicable.
This privacy statement applies to the use of a student generative AI application Corella (powered by QChat) during the department’s Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) student trial and is part of the Terms of Use. QChat is a Queensland Government AI interactive virtual assistant developed by the Department of Transport and Main Roads' Queensland Customer and Digital Group. Corella is a student version based on QChat that allows users teachers and students to seek knowledge, brainstorm ideas, look for explanations of complex topics, and access writing assistance.
This privacy statement sets out how we handle your personal information during the AI student trial and, in particular, any personal information that is collected, disclosed or otherwise handled in connection with the Corella application.
What is personal information and why do we collect it?
Personal information is information or opinion, including information or an opinion forming part of a database, whether true or not, and whether recorded in a material form or not, about an individual whose identity is apparent, or can reasonably be ascertained, from the information or opinion.
If you participate in the AI student trial of Corella, the department will collect your personal information including but not limited to:
- first and last name
- departmental username, departmental email address, year group, school code, school region, and role
- the prompts entered into Corella, including any personal information contained therein or in attachments uploaded to Corella
- the responses generated by Corella, including any personal information contained therein; and
- any feedback you provide as part of the AI student trial of Corella.
Students must be aged 13 years or older to use Corella and their use must comply with the safe, ethical and responsible use of ICT as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct and in particular their school's relevant procedure on accessing department's/school's ICT services, facilities and devices. As advised in the Terms of Use, users of Corella should not enter any personal information into the Corella application as prompts or contained in attachments uploaded to the application.
Use and disclosure of information
The department is collecting your personal information for the purpose of administering the student AI trial, monitoring Corella’s effectiveness, to respond to feedback about its operation during the trial and evaluating the safe, ethical and responsible use of the Corella application as a generative AI tool on teacher practices and student learning experiences. The department will use the results of the student AI trial to inform the development of guidance and resources to support schools leveraging generative AI for teaching and learning.
Your personal information will only be accessed by authorised staff within the department, including:
- authorised administrators of Corella as part of the provision of the Corella application and
- the department's information and communication technology service providers as part of the provision of the Corella application.
To authenticate and authorise your access to Corella we need to disclose certain personal information to authorised staff within the Department of Transport and Main Roads; the provisioner of the Corella application. This includes the credentials used to sign in to the Corella application that is used to verify your entitlement to access the application and administer your use of the application. The Department of Transport and Main Roads manages personal information in accordance with Information Privacy Act 2009, and more information can be found in their Privacy Statement.
Your personal information will be retained for the duration of the student AI trial and the subsequent evaluation period.
The department will only use your personal information collected for the purposes stated above and will not use or disclose your personal information otherwise, unless authorised or required by law. Use of de-identified information
We may aggregate, anonymise or otherwise de-identify your personal information (so that it can no longer be associated with you) for analytics, research or statistical purposes, and for the purposes of improving our services and systems. We may use such de-identified information indefinitely without further notice to you.
Storage and security of personal information
Your personal information is stored in a manner that reasonably protects it from misuse and loss and from unauthorised access, modification or disclosure. The department has contracted the Microsoft Azure cloud hosting solution to allow the authorised provision of the Corella application at Microsoft's secure data centre in Australia.
