Purpose
To assist schools with the replacement of beginning teachers during the additional non-contact time as prescribed in teachers awards and certified agreements.
To support a beginning teacher's induction to the teaching profession, additional non-contact time is provided to eligible teachers.
This additional non-contact time assists beginning teachers with the development of their teaching skills and their transition from graduate level to proficient level with the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.
All permanent and temporary classroom teachers in their first 12 months of teaching will be provided additional non-contact time per week in addition to their entitlement to non-contact time as prescribed in the Teachers' Award and Certified Agreement.
From 2022, the non-contact time provided to beginning teachers is:
Primary | 150 minutes | 60 minutes | 210 minutes |
Special | 150 minutes | 60 minutes | 210 minutes |
Secondary | 210 minutes | 70 minutes | 280 minutes |
Duration of program

Eligibility
Teachers who meet all of the following criteria as at the first school day* each year will be considered beginning teachers for the entire school year:
- employed permanently or on a temporary contract for a term or more in a Queensland state school
- provisionally registered with the Queensland College of Teachers
- have less than a full school year of teaching experience in a permanent or temporary capacity.
* Eligibility for existing teachers engaged on temporary contracts after the first day of school will be determined based on their status as at the first day of their appointment. Eligibility for newly appointed teachers made after the first day of school, such as mid-year graduates, will be determined as at the first day of their appointment.
Allocation of funds
Funding to support the additional non-contact time is calculated centrally at the end of each term based on the numbers of identified beginning teachers and paid directly into a school's bank account early in the following term via the School Appropriation and Payments Application (SAPA).
