Purpose
The First Nations Languages Program (FNLP) is to assist schools with the additional resourcing required to work in partnership with local Language Owners to co-design, co-plan and co-deliver Aboriginal language programs and Torres Strait Islander language programs in schools.
Duration of program
Ongoing
Eligibility
All state schools are eligible to express interest in the program.
Allocation of funds
Total budget for 2024 is $200,000.
It is expected that schools applying for the FNLP will be at different stages of co-designing and co-delivering with the owners of the languages and have very different contexts.
Because of this, in 2024, the department is offering 2 levels of funding:
$7,500 for those schools who are at the early stages of developing relationships with Language Owners and are not yet teaching. These funds could be utilised for consultation with Language Owners and initial research about the language program
$15,000 to those who already have established relationships, an ongoing advisory group and are beginning or already teaching language as a subject area. These funds could be utilised for curriculum development, employment of staff and professional development.
There is a $5,000 discretionary amount in the budget to allow for an evaluation panel to determine reasonable adjustment to applications, if required.
