Queensland Children's Hospital school kindergarten and playgroups

​​​​​​​​​​​Purpose

To fund Queensland Children’s Hospital School (QCHS) to:

  • employ teachers to deliver a kindergarten program within selected regional hospitals, including an early childhood qualified teacher as the hospital kindy coordinator
  • employ an early childhood educator to offer playgroups within the Queensland Children's Hospital precinct in South Brisbane
  • purchase educational resources to support delivery of the kindergarten programs and playgroups.

Funding paid under this appropriation must be used as allocated and are not to be used for purposes other than those specified in this appropriation, without approval from the Early Childhood Division (Deputy Director-General, Early Childhood).

Payment is made directly to QCHS​.

From 2026, FTE allocations will vary to accommodate the staged rollout of the hospital kindy program across up to 8 regional hospitals and based on program demand.

Recoupment policy

Funding for the FTE positions is paid on the basis that:

  • kindergarten children are registered in OneSchool and accessing kindergarten programs at the identified hospitals
  • children aged birth to 5 years are accessing playgroups at Ronald McDonald House in South Brisbane and the Starlight Room at the Queensland Children's Hospital.

Funds not expended for the purpose allocated may be recouped. All recoupment scenarios will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
