Every early career teacher deserves the very best start to their career in Queensland state schools. Effective induction can accelerate the development of effective teaching practices and support the wellbeing of early career teachers.

The flagship Early Career Teacher Program: Starting Successfully has been designed to engage early career teachers in targeted professional learning that supports them to enter the teaching profession with confidence. Investing in teaching expertise is a priority of the department’s education strategy.

The program provides early career teachers with opportunities to strengthen their teaching practice, build professional connections and generate evidence for full registration. It will equip early career teachers and school-based mentors with the knowledge and skills to establish effective mentoring relationships that develop quality teaching and support every student to progress in their learning.

Audience and eligibility

All early career teachers, including graduates and preservice teachers with permission to teach (PTT) in Queensland state schools.

Queensland state school teachers and leaders looking to strengthen and support the professional practice of early career teachers through mentoring.

Objectives

The program aims to provide every early career teacher with a positive induction experience by:

  • welcoming early career teachers to Queensland state schools through school-based onboarding, orientation and mentoring
  • empowering early career teachers and school-based mentors by building their skills, knowledge and confidence to deliver excellence in teaching and learning
  • supporting early career teachers to establish professional identities, engage with colleagues within and beyond their school and thrive in their career.

Structure

The program is purpose-built to strengthen school-based onboarding and induction, providing access to quality mentoring and a suite of digital content and instructional materials, aimed to enrich the learning experiences of participants.

Included in the program:

  • foundations for teaching and learning
  • effective school-based mentoring
  • microlearning aligned with system priorities
  • a purpose-built online portal
  • collaboration opportunities.

Impact

97% of participants identified that their teaching practices and processes were enhanced following engagement in the program, and that they were confident to apply what they have learned.
