Participation in sport provides children with the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to develop and maintain their physical, mental, social and emotional health.

Sport promotes the potential for lifelong participation in physical activity through the development of motor skills, movement competence and health-related physical fitness.

Engaging in sport provides children with a sense of community and social connectedness, which are vital components of overall wellbeing.

Interschool sport

Interschool sport provides students with the opportunity to participate in a structured sport competition which is played between schools.

The interschool sport program should enhance the physical activity component of the school's health and wellbeing curriculum program. Schools implement a program that reflects the school and local community's needs and opportunities. Each school sport district should develop a competition suitable to the district size, remoteness of member schools, staff resources and historical experience.

The following personnel and groups can provide assistance in developing school sport programs:

  • School sport district secretaries and committees
  • Regional school sport officers and their regional school sport boards
  • Queensland School Sport Council of Management committee
  • Primary and secondary sport-specific committees
  • Local community sporting clubs
  • Department of Communities, Sport and Recreation and community services advisors.

Representative school sports

Representative School Sport allows students to foster connections with their own school, other schools and the broader community.
