Parents and carers of students attending non-state schools can contact Parentline, a free and confidential service available 7 days a week. Parentline provides advice and counselling on issues such as bullying, anxiety, behaviour and family relationships.

Non-state schools parent organisations
Catholic School Parents Queensland and the
Queensland Independent Schools Parents Network support parent engagement in non-state school sector. These organisations receive funding from the Queensland Department of Education to deliver initiatives that strengthen parent engagement.
Costs of education
The Department of Education provides assistance to eligible non-state school students and families with some education related costs, including textbooks and living away from home to attend school.

School fees are set by individual non-state schools. Parents are encouraged to talk to their school principal if they are experiencing difficulties paying school fees.
School Transport
Non-State Schools Transport Assistance Scheme
Non-state school students may be eligible for assistance through the Non-State Schools Transport Assistance Scheme (NSSTAS).
The scheme is administered by Catholic Education Queensland Limited as a joint initiative with Independent Schools Queensland.
NSSTAS has 2 programs available:
- Bus fare assistance—for bus or ferry services to non-state schools outside the Brisbane City Council boundary
- Students with disability—assistance to families with costs in transporting students with disability to non-state schools within Queensland
Complaints about non-state schools
If you have concerns about a non-state school, you are encouraged to raise them with the school principal, and if needed, the school’s governing body.
Complaints about non-state school accreditation matters, including concerns that a school is operating without accreditation, can be made to the Non-State Schools Accreditation Board (NSSAB) by emailing
nssab.admin@qed.qld.gov.au or telephoning (07) 3513 6773.

Complaints about teachers at a non-state school can also be raised with the principal in the first instance. If the matter is not resolved, you can make a complaint to the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT). Information about the QCT complaints process is available on the
