The department is delivering new state schools in high-growth residential areas to meet the needs of Queensland communities.

Our new state schools give young people a world-class education with exceptional teachers, in modern high-quality learning environments.

New schools in 2017

2017 saw the opening of 4 new schools:

  • Bellbird Park State Secondary College (PPP)

    The Bellbird Park area has experienced significant population growth over the past decade.

    To ensure that high-quality educational facilities are accessible to all local students, a new secondary school for Bellbird Park was included in the Queensland Schools Public Private Partnership announced in December 2013.

    Bellbird Park's new secondary school will be Years 7–12, with stage 1 proposed to be completed by January 2017 and stage 2 having a proposed completion date of January 2019.

    Official opening dates have yet to be determined. The newly appointed school principal will decide the official name of the school in coming months with the consultation of relevant local communities.

  • Pumicestone State School (PPP)

    The Caboolture area has experienced significant population growth over the past decade.

    To ensure that high-quality educational facilities are accessible to all local students, a new primary school for Caboolture North East was included in the Queensland Schools Public Private Partnership announced in December 2013.

    The new school will be Prep to Year 6 school, with stage 1 proposed to be completed by January 2017 and stage 2 having a proposed completion date of January 2019.

    Official opening dates have yet to be determined. The newly appointed school principal will decide the official name of the school in coming months with the consultation of relevant local communities.

    The school is intended to have a peak enrolment of approximately 850–900 students by 2024.

  • Fernbrooke State School (PPP)

    The Redbank Plains area has experienced significant population growth over the past decade.

    To ensure that high-quality educational facilities are accessible to all local students, a new primary school for Redbank Plains was included in the Queensland Schools Public Private Partnership announced in December 2013.

    The new school will be Prep to Year 6, with stage 1 proposed to be completed by January 2017 and stage 2 having a proposed completion date of January 2019.

    Official opening dates have yet to be determined. The newly appointed school principal will decide the official name of the school in coming months with the consultation of relevant local communities.

    The school is intended to have a peak enrolment of approximately 750–800 by 2024.

  • Cairns State Special School

    The development of Cairns State Special School will deliver 21st century facilities for students with a high level of need and requirements.

    The contract to commence delivery of the $24.1 million special school was awarded in January 2016.

    The project is currently in Stage 1 construction, and is scheduled to open at the commencement of the 2017 school year.

    • civil works to building platforms are currently being undertaken at the site with blocks anticipated for progressive completion between October and December 2016
    • civil works to the new oval is complete including turfing
    • the trunk sewer connection and stormwater retention basin has now reached completion; and bulk earthworks across the site completed, with in-ground services for water, sewerage, fire, electrical and communications.
