Volunteering opportunities
Volunteers play an important role in supporting the delivery of The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award (The Duke of Ed). A range of volunteer opportunities are available, each contributing to positive outcomes for young people and their communities.
Duke of Ed Leaders
Duke of Ed Leaders play a critical role in supporting the personal development of participants as they work towards their goals. The role also provides opportunities to develop leadership, mentoring and organisational skills. Delivering The Duke of Ed in your school or community organisation can be an incredibly rewarding experience.
It is the responsibility of the Duke of Ed Leader, on behalf of their Duke of Ed Centre, to ensure that assessors and supervisors are suitable. This includes making sure that all volunteers working with young people under the age of 18 comply with Queensland legislation and requirements relating to working with children (Blue Card Services), and that they complete a volunteer code of conduct form.
Assessors
Assessors volunteer support by providing individual guidance, encouragement and feedback for a chosen activity. Assessors are responsible for reviewing progress and confirming achievement within a section.
Supervisors
All journeys (practice and qualifying) must have at least 1 supervisor who is suitably skilled, experienced and qualified. The nature and level of supervision will be determined by the Duke of Ed Leader in conjunction with the supervisor and must be approved by the Duke of Ed Centre.
The supervisor can be a different person for each journey, and there can also be more than 1 supervisor for each journey. Further information about adventurous journey requirements is available from the Queensland Award Operating Authority.
How to apply
All volunteers must be 18 years or over and be connected to a Duke of Ed Centre. Additional requirements may apply depending on the volunteer role. For more information, contact a local Duke of Ed Centre or email the Queensland Award Operating Authority at qld.award.office@qed.qld.gov.au.
