School holiday language courses
Global Engagement (GE) within the Department of Education International (DEi), in partnership with The University of Queensland (UQ) and James Cook University (JCU), offer online and face-to-face language courses for Queensland state school students.
The courses aim to assist students with developing their international-mindedness, experience immersion of a second language and develop digital literacy.
Course costs are fully funded by DEi for successful applicants. You are encouraged to regularly visit this page for future program updates.
Current opportunities
James Cook University Academy of Modern Languages Language Courses—online delivery
GE within the DEi, in partnership with James Cook University Academy of Modern Languages (JCU AML), offers an online school holiday language program for Queensland state school students in Years 5–12 learning French, Japanese, Chinese (Mandarin), Italian or Spanish.
Course dates: 1–5 July 2024
Languages on offer: French, Japanese, Chinese (Mandarin), Italian and Spanish
Delivery mode: Online delivery via Blackboard Collaborate
Sessions: Students register for one JCU language being offered and will be expected to participate for 1.5 hours daily over 5 consecutive days*
Cost: Opportunities are available for successful applicants to have program costs covered by DEi.
Technical requirements: Participants will need access to a reliable internet connection, computer, headset/headphones (with microphone) and a webcam.
How to apply: Applications for 2024 are open. For more information and to apply, please download and complete the
expression of interest form, include a language teacher endorsement and submit to
global.engagement@qed.qld.gov.au by 5pm Monday 10 June 2024.
*You will be informed of your session time prior to course commencement. However, you will need to have full availability during the 5 days to ensure you can participate in your allocated session time.
The University of Queensland Institute of Modern Languages Beginner Bootcamp Language Courses—online delivery
GE within DEi, in partnership with University of Queensland Institute of Modern Languages (UQ IML), is offering online language courses for Queensland state school students in Years 6–12 who want to experience learning a second language. Current languages on offer for 2024 are Korean and Spanish. Students are not required to have any prior experience of language learning to apply for this course.
Course dates: 16–20 September 2024
Languages on offer: Korean and Japanese
Delivery mode: Online delivery via Zoom
Sessions: Students register for 1 UQ IML language being offered and will be expected to participate for 2.15 hours daily over 5 consecutive days. Depending on the language, sessions will either run 9.00–11.15 am or 10.00am–12.15pm daily.
Cost: Opportunities are available for successful applicants to have program costs covered by DEi.
Technical requirements: Participants will need access to a reliable internet connection, computer, headset/headphones (with microphone) and a webcam.

The UQ IML Language Enrichment Courses—face-to-face delivery
GE within the DEi, in partnership with the UQ IML, offers face-to-face language courses for Queensland state school students in Years 11–12 studying Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese or Spanish.
Venue: The University of Queensland, St Lucia Campus
Cost: DEi will cover the costs of venue hire, tuition and course materials for all state school participants.

The UQ IML Language Enrichment Courses—online delivery
GE within DEi, in partnership with UQ IML, offers online language courses for Queensland state school students in Years 9–10 studying Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese or Spanish. Language courses are also available for Queensland state school students in Years 11–12 studying Japanese and Italian.
Venue: Online via Zoom
