Global Engagement (GE) within the Department of Education International (DEi), in collaboration with a selection of partners, provides online programs for students enrolled in Queensland state schools. These opportunities promote the global competencies of students by expanding their cultural awareness of different countries and developing skills in languages other than English. These programs aim to equip students to succeed in an increasingly interconnected global landscape. See below for available online student programs.
Current opportunities
Global Passport: Explore the world in 5 days
DEi, in partnership with Griffith University, is offering state school students in Years 4–6 the opportunity to participate in a 5-day online program where they will virtually ‘travel’ the world. The program is designed to build global competence in Queensland students while bringing the world to them from the comfort of their home. Each day, students will experience different cultures through interactive activities, basic language learning, and the exploration of diverse topics including food, art, daily life, cultural traditions and landmarks.
Course dates: 13–17 January 2025
Eligibility: Open to students in Years 4–6 enrolled in a Queensland state school
Delivery mode: Online delivery via Microsoft Teams
Sessions: 1.5-hour sessions over 5 consecutive days. Allocated session times will be confirmed prior to commencement. However, students will need to be available to attend any allocated session between 9.00am and 2.30pm. Courses run subject to sufficient applications being received.
Technical requirements: Participants will need access to a reliable internet connection, PC/laptop/tablet, headset/headphones (with microphone) and a webcam.

Recent opportunities
Queensland Future School Leaders Program
DEi, in partnership with Asia Education Foundation (AEF), is offering students in Years 5–6 the opportunity to participate in the Queensland Future School Leaders Program. The program aims to encourage students who demonstrate exceptional leadership skills and have ambition to be future leaders to become globally competent by collaborating online with similarly aged students from across Asia. Students will address issues identified in the
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to answer school-based problems, then collaborate and present global solutions in a shared, online platform supported by DEi and AEF staff.
Course dates: 15, 22, 29 October and 19 November 2024
Eligibility: Open to students in Years 5–6 enrolled in a Queensland state school who show strong leadership skills. Schools may nominate 4–6 students to participate in the program.
Delivery mode: Online delivery
Sessions: 3-hour sessions over 4 program days (see course dates)
Technical requirements: Participants will need access to a reliable internet connection, computer, headset/headphones (with microphone) and a webcam.

Beginner Language Bootcamp
GE within DEi, in partnership with the University of Queensland Institute of Modern Languages, is offering online language courses for Queensland state school students in Years 6–12 who want to experience learning a second language. Current languages on offer for 2024 are Korean and Japanese. Students are not required to have any prior experience of language learning to apply for this course.
Course dates: 16–20 September 2024
Languages on offer: Korean and Japanese
Delivery mode: Online delivery via Microsoft Teams
Sessions: Students register for 1 language being offered and will be expected to participate for 2.15 hours daily over 5 consecutive days. Depending on the language, sessions will either run 9.00–11.15am or 10.00am–12.15pm daily.
Cost: Opportunities are available for successful applicants to have program costs covered by DEi.
