Queensland state schools undertake 6 staff professional development days throughout the year:

  • two days at the end of the summer holidays (fixed)
  • three days during the Easter holidays (flexible)
  • one day on the third Monday after the spring holidays (fixed: NB: may be used as a flexible student free day following consultation at the local level).

The staff professional development days at the end of the summer holiday are fixed and must occur on the scheduled days. Schools have the flexibility to position the remaining four professional development days during any school holiday period or at any time outside of school hours, according to their workforce needs and arrangements. Schools that choose to make flexible arrangements for these days must ensure that a total of 20 hours professional development is undertaken. This time is exclusive of staff meetings.

Students are not required to attend school on the third Monday after the spring holidays. Similar to the 3 flexible days during the Easter holidays, there is flexibility in how schools use this professional development time.

  • If a school chooses to undertake the 5 required hours of professional development outside school hours, staff are not required to attend school on this day.
  • If a school chooses to undertake the 5 required hours of professional development on this day, it must be taken on the third Monday after the spring holidays.

For all flexible arrangements, the school community must ensure that decisions are made in consultation with Local Consultative Committee. Schools with less than 20 employees must liaise with a consultative body of staff.

Arrangements for staff professional development days must be finalised by the end of the previous year.

As required, the Minister for Education may approve staff professional development days for specific professional development opportunities.

What flexible arrangement may apply to the 5 flexible staff professional development days?

A school community may decide to designate 4 staff professional development days during the Easter holiday, on the third Monday after the spring holiday(1), or within any one or across the mid-year holiday periods. Alternatively a school community may decide to schedule blocks of dedicated professional development outside school hours, for example after school. Whatever flexible arrangement is decided, a total of 25 hours' professional development must be scheduled in addition to the fixed staff professional development days.

(1) Note: The third Monday after the spring holiday (i.e. October) is not a flexible staff professional development day until after it has been before the Local Consultative Committee for conversion from a fixed to a flexible day.
