Chaplains and student wellbeing staff play a valuable role providing on-the-ground support for school communities. Dedicated wellbeing staff offer students a trusted adult to turn to and help build a safe, inclusive and caring school community.

Schools can choose to engage a chaplain or student wellbeing staff​, guided by local community and school priorities. This flexible model allows schools to focus on what matters most to their students and families, enabling tailored wellbeing approaches that complement and enhance existing support strategies.

Wellbeing support, right when it's needed

Whether it is checking in with students, or offering a listening ear, student wellbeing staff provide practical, on-the-ground support that makes a significant impact.

Their work complements broader wellbeing strategies in schools by helping to monitor student wellbeing, strengthening school-community connections, and providing practical and emotional support to students.

Flexible support tailored to local needs

Every school community is different. That's why student wellbeing staff​ support is flexible and guided by what matters most to each school community.

  • Early support that makes a difference—student wellbeing staff contribute to whole school approaches to wellbeing by helping to identify concerns early and providing students with informal, approachable support before issues escalate.
  • Stronger community and family connections—by strengthening relationships between schools, families and the community, student wellbeing staff help build a sense of connection and shared responsibility for student wellbeing.
  • Trusted caring presence—as visible, approachable adults in schools, student wellbeing staff ​serve as role models, offering students additional support and someone to turn to during challenging times.

Expanding our support to reach more students

All Queensland schools were invited to apply for government funding from 2024 to 2027. Additional funding will be released from Semester 2 2025, to support waitlisted schools and increase access to these roles across state schools.

With increased access to chaplains and student wellbeing staff, more students will have the support they need to thrive, backed by trusted adults, caring school communities, and a shared commitment to wellbeing.
