We fund several organisations to provide targeted engagement incentives to encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to remain actively engaged in education and complete Year 12. We know that when students regularly attend school, they can achieve outcomes and realise their full potential.
Attendance and engagement programs (A&E) aim to maximise days of learning and reduce teacher workload by improving attendance, reducing school disciplinary absences and increasing Years 10–12 retention. A&E programs can also help assist students to transition from school to employment, training or further education.
We work with organisations to deliver mentoring, coaching and before and after school programs to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Currently, the department funds 5 providers to deliver A&E programs across 59 state schools:
