Home education associations and advocacy groups

There are a broad range of services, advocacy groups and support networks within the home education community in Queensland. These can be found online or through social media.

Home education families often find it helpful to connect with associations, advocacy groups and peer support networks. There are 3 non-profit organisations that support the home educating community in Queensland and meet with QHE quarterly to share information and community perspectives:

• Free2Homeschool advocate for educational choice, best practices and opportunities for children, providing research-based, child-centred, focused support to home educators.
• Home Education Association Queensland promotes home education, empowers home educators and advances educational equity, recognising the diversity of philosophies and methods used by home educators.
• Home Education Queensland Inc. is a registered charity that empowers families, enhances home education communities, advocates for evidence-based policy, and promotes information sharing, events and discounts for home educators.

These groups can provide practical information, community connection, support and guidance.

Getting started

• You can apply for an ID card for your child if they are registered for home education.
• Allowances open to home educating families include the Textbook and resource allowance and the Back to school boost.
• learning@home provides information, ideas, unit and lesson plans for home learning, including a range of learning resources.
• Scootle provides lesson ideas and resources using Australian Curriculum aligned subject areas. Contact homeeducation@qed.qld.gov.au for login details.
• The Australian Curriculum has resources to support planning for learning, including parent resources, and information about subject-focused learning areas, general capabilities, and learning activities.

Supporting diverse learners

• The Australian Curriculum provides student diversity resources to support all students in accessing, participating and progressing in their learning.
• The Department of Education provides inclusive resources designed to provide targeted support and strategies for a range learning needs, including children with autism, vision impairment, or who are deaf and hard of hearing.
• inclusionED is a source of evidence for best practice in relation to autism, developed with funding from the Australian Government.
• Stepping Stones Triple P Program is designed to support parents and carers who have children with developmental disability, neurodiversity (like autism and ADHD), or additional needs.

Parent support

• Parentline is a free, confidential, 7-day-a-week hotline serviced by trained counsellors, supporting Queensland parents.
• The Positive Parenting Program (Triple P) offers practical skills and tools to help parents develop strong, positive relationships with their children.

Curriculum, assessment and senior pathways

• National Assessment Program—Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)—eligible home educating children can participate in NAPLAN. More information can be found in the frequently asked questions.
• Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE)—for practical advice tailored to senior students interested in a QCE, visit the myQCE website.
• TAFE Queensland—discover TAFE trade and training opportunities, such as TAFE at School or a Career Taster program.
• School-based Apprenticeship or Traineeships (SAT)—information on apprenticeships and traineeships is available through the Department of Trade, Employment and Training.
• Unique student identifier (USI)—is a unique number that all Australian young people receive to participate in recognised study, including university and vocational education and training (VET).
• Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC)—provides information about applying to college or university, including enabling and bridging pathways that help learners meet entry requirements for their desired courses.
• Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)—provides a standardised measure for university admissions.
• Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) —is responsible for curriculum development, assessment and certification.
