Latest updates
To support student safety, minimise risk and reduce red tape, new resources are now available to help schools to manage hazards and risks in student activities:
- New CARA
travel and
accommodation guidelines available to support planning for off-site activities.
- Departmental staff can search 'managing risks in student activities' on OnePortal to access information, resources and tools in the Student Activities Safety Hub.
Existing OneSchool CARA records showing as 'Expired'
A OneSchool CARA record will display as 'Expired' whenever the CARA guideline is revised and published. However, the 'Expired' label does not necessarily mean the CARA record is invalid.
Schools are to consult the updated CARA guideline to identify any additional safety considerations of the activity in their local context.
- If the changes do not impact the safety of the approved activity, no action is required.
- If the changes do impact the safety of the approved activity, schools should then either
- amend the expired CARA record to reflect any new safety considerations, using the free text boxes in 'Monitor and review'
- complete a new CARA record for the activity.

The
managing risks in school curriculum activities procedure provides the process for risk assessment and management of activities planned to
deliver the curriculum in kindergarten to Year 12.
The CARA guidelines demonstrate the minimum safety standard expected for common student activities. Schools are required to:
- consult the published CARA guideline as a starting point to determine additional hazards, risks, and control measures relevant to the activity and the specific school/group circumstances in order to lift the safety standard above the minimum
- conduct and prepare a risk assessment for that curriculum activity, if required.
If any requirement cannot be met, alternative control measures must be put in place to meet or exceed the standard provided in the CARA guideline.
